Winter Pine Trees

Mr. VandenBerg’s Third Graders are finishing up a watercolor project.  They created a beautiful background for their trees by brushing cool colors on a 9×12 sheet of watercolor paper and sprinkling the wet paper with salt.  When they rubbed the dry salt away during the next class, it was amazing to see the different textures created by the salt.

After practicing their brushstrokes, the class painted gorgeous pine trees with India ink.

Winter Snowflakes

We’ve had several inches of snow this week, to the delight of our students.  Makes a nice tie-in to the snowflake project that some of my classes have been enjoying.  Since some of my classes are playing “catch up” with other projects, I started these snowflakes in some of my 5th and 3rd grades.  I think this was a project I saw on Artsonia – so if it’s yours, let me know so I can give you credit for a project that my students are loving!

We drew our snowflakes with crayon and then outlined them with oil pastel – my kiddos enjoyed the way the oil pastel made the crayon look all “foggy”.  Then we painted over the snowflake with watercolor and added salt on top.  During the next class we rubbed the salt off to reveal beautiful splotches and textures.

And finally – a little splash of glitter.  Now I know some of you art teachers out there don’t like glitter…so sorry about breaking the glitter ban….but ya gotta have a little glitter on a snowflake!

Clay Projects Continue…

We are continuing our clay projects in grades 3, 4, and 5 – students will begin adding glazes to their projects over the next few classes. Today we put the holiday music on and glazed our coil pots!

Action Jackson Project

Third Grade artists began learning about “Action Jackson” Pollock this week.  We read Action Jackson by Greenberg and Jordan, and looked at several reproductions of Pollock’s action paintings.  Everyone was excited and energized by Pollock’s abstract expressionist paintings!

So we got busy with our Action Jackson project by creating a textured background with warm color crayons.  This was a great review of warm colors as third graders sorted out the pink, orange, yellow, and red crayons for their texture rubbings.  Next week…string printing on the textured background!

Third Grade Nature Drawings

Third Graders completed their line review with observation drawings from nature.  After examining the detailed drawings of Albrecht Durer, third graders were excited to create their own drawings from nature by looking at loads of leaves, dried flowers and branches from Mrs. Brouwer’s garden.  I learned later from my students that they were studying plants in their classroom  – so our art project became a great tie-in to their classroom curriculum.  I love it when those connections happen!

The final step in this project was to add some color by printing leaves – we painted leaves with tempera paint and pressed them onto our drawings.

Lines and More Lines!

My artists in grades 1, 2, and 3 began the school year reviewing and experimenting with the art element of line.  Check out our awesome line projects!

First Grade Exploring Lines…..

Second Grade Scribble Line Drawing.  We talked about all the kinds of lines we know – then took a dot for a walk – and put all of our lines into an awesome scribble drawing.

Grade 2 Scribble Line Drawing

Third Grade Yarn Line.  This was fun – we “drew” a line with yarn first  and glued it down….then went to town with every kind of line we could think of to accent the yarn line.

Matisse and the Eye Path

Third grade artists have been learning about Henri Matisse this week.  They discovered that Matisse “drew with his scissors” as he made his cut paper collages.  They were intrigued to learn about the way Matisse created an eye-path for the viewer to follow in his “Beasts of the Sea” collage – and now we are looking for an artist eye-path in every work of art that we see!

Today 3rd grade began “drawing with scissors” to create their own cut-paper collages – a Matisse inspired figure with a border filled with organic shapes – and of course, an eye path!
