Georgetown artists are featured in the March 2017 Arts & Activities Magazine!

First grade artists show off their amazing self portraits and clay pendants in the magazine’s center page spread, titled “First Grade Portraits With Pendants”, written and submitted by yours truly, Mrs. Brouwer.

1st Grade Watermelon Self-Portraits

Nothing says summer like watermelon! We are beginning to think about summer here at Georgetown and to celebrate summer we threw a twist into our self-portrait project. We decided to draw ourselves eating a large piece of watermelon.  The 1st grade artists had fun looking at their facial features in the mirror to make their drawings unique to them. They found out quickly that hair is one of the hardest things to draw.  Self-portraits are really hard to do, and all of the artists did an excellent job!IMG_7602IMG_7586IMG_7559IMG_7553IMG_7544IMG_7542IMG_7531IMG_3944The portraits were glued onto a tablecloth background to look like they were on a picnic. Bees and ants, (and even a few spiders), were added because no picnic is complete without them!

Learning Goals:

I can draw a realistic self-portrait

I can use watercolor crayons to create my own skin and eye color.

Kindergarten Self-Portraits

Kindergarten artists created these special self-portraits to give their moms for Mother’s Day. The artists learned that a self-portrait is a drawing or painting of themselves. I love the innocence of Kindergarten drawings, and knew their moms would love their drawings too.  I struggled with directing the students too much so all the portraits looked the same, but directing them enough so they would have success with their portraits. I decided to take the students through an exercise of exploring their faces and bodies so they did not miss any parts. We pulled our shoulders up to see what we would look like if we didn’t have a neck and they thought that would look pretty silly! We also discovered that our eyes are in the middle of our heads, not our noses. After exploring their bodies, students eagerly began drawing their portraits while adding their own unique touches. After the portraits were finished and the tissue paper backgrounds were added, their classroom teachers helped them write notes and Mother’s Day wishes to their moms around the border. Precious Portraits With Pendants

Have I mentioned before that I adore my first grade artists?  Check out their stunning self portraits and beautiful clay pendants!

The project began with the creation of our clay pendants – my first grader’s  very first clay project!  After some time rolling and smooshing the clay, we smashed it into a nice clay cookie and added texture with bottle caps and sticks.  After oohing and aahing at their finished glazed pendants, they spent lots of time lining up their beads in different patterns before stringing them.

  

Next came the portraits – we viewed self-portraits by famous artists, and there was lots of giggling as we looked in our mirrors and drew our faces.  First graders smiled into their mirrors and noticed how lines showed up around their mouths, noticed that their eyebrows were made up of little hairs, and that their ears were in line with their eyes.

Their finished portraits are so cute – and many of them captured a good likeness of themselves!
