First Grade artists reviewed color, shape, and pattern while creating their cute chameleons. They were challenged to use a ROYGBIV rainbow color order somewhere on their chameleons. Check out the tails and feet on these cute little guys!

First Grade Color Fun
First grade artists have been playing around with color! They recently learned about primary and secondary colors and did a little “non-messy” color mixing by rubbing over paint that had been covered with plastic wrap. They were excited to see the colors change from red, yellow, and blue to purple, green and orange as they squished the paint under the plastic wrap.
We read a perfect book to tie in to our color mixing – “Monsters Love Colors” by Mike Austin – all about monsters (and first graders!) who love to scribble, scribble, mix, dance and wiggle!
After mixing our colors on paper plates, we peeled back the plastic wrap to reveal our beautiful colors. Even our wastebasket looked colorful.
First graders finished their color class by designing their own “color wheel turtle” to take home.
And while we’re talking color…take a minute to explore this fun link about color from NPR….their introduction says it is a weird little lesson in color, and it is indeed!
Kandinsky Project
Georgetown fourth grade artists are finishing up a big Kandinsky project this week. The project is stunning, and we can’t wait to hang these in the hallway!
After looking at Kandinsky’s Several Circles No. 323 and discussing abstract art, we got started.

We began by thinking about texture and color as we created our background.

Next came tempera paint in rainbow order, with a little white thrown in for playing with tints.

We traced circles and painted over our marker lines with black tempera paint.

Then – more color, this time thinking about warm and cool colors as we painted the circles.
One more look at Kandinsky’s circle painting and a big discussion about eye path and leading the viewer through the artwork by using shape and color….and finally, cutting our circles, carefully placing them on the background, and gluing the circles down. The results….stunning.
