Fifth graders have been looking at lots of masks as they are learning about African culture. After viewing 12th century cast metal sculptures and masks made by the Yoruba people of what is now southern Nigeria, we began crafting metal masks using 32 gauge copper foil.
We created texture on our masks by rubbing with texture plates, and color was added with permanent markers.
Wow, the Hundertwasser landscapes that my 5th graders are finishing up are just beautiful. Today they added fabric circles to complete their pieces.

Adding fabric circles (yes, that’s a cheese-head hat in the photo – it was crazy hat day!)
