Third Grade Egyptian Portraits

My third grade artists recently wrapped up this neat project that tied in to our study of Middle Eastern Culture.  I took their profile photos and printed them in black and white, and after discussing King Tut and Queen Nefertiti and looking at Egyptian hieroglyphs, they were ready to work!

Thanks to MaryMaking  for sharing her Ancient Egyptian Royalty project – my third graders loved it!

First Grade Mummies – Finished!

First grade finished up their cool mummy paintings that they began last week by adding Egyptian hieroglyphs on the picture border.  I gave them a reference sheet that showed our alphabet and a hieroglyph alphabet – they were fascinated with the pictures and excited to write their name in hieroglyph form.  And best of all was choosing a special shiny jewel to glue on their Egyptian mummy portraits!

Egyptian Mummy Cases

My first graders started these great mummy case paintings this week.  After lots of discussion about pyramids and mummies (wow, do first graders ever know a bunch of crazy things about pyramids and mummies!) we painted with black tempera paint directly on textured construction paper.  I led them step by step, starting with a big “U” for the face.  Next week – we’ll try some Egyptian hieroglyphs along our picture frame border.
