Turkeys

I’ve been a little “turkeyed out” this year and didn’t create a new Turkey Day project for my younger grades.  But I shouldn’t have worried…one of my fellow classroom teachers, Mr. Jurewicz, came up with this great project that his kiddos created last week.  I’m thinking Mr. J. should think about trading jobs with me sometime!  Way to go Mr. Jurewicz AND your creative first grade crew!

Mrs. Brouwer & Thistle Gallery

My summer “Art Teacher Goal” has been to get my artwork into a local art gallery….and I am happy to tell you that my fiber pieces and collages are now being shown at the Thistle Gallery in Holland, MI!  This is a fun little gallery in downtown Holland; there is a cool mix of funky and fabulous artwork on display, including goodies from Valley View Farm Fibers!  Here’s a look at some of my recent pieces that are at Thistle Gallery.

Mrs. Brouwer is having an Art Show!

Like many art teachers, I also like to create my own art for personal enjoyment.  I have had two exciting things happen recently with my own art production.

I submitted two of my fiber collages in a Winter Art Festival competition at Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven, MI.  There were 159 works of art submitted, and only 70 were accepted – including my two pieces!  The pieces will be on display through the end of February as a part of the 13th Annual Winter Art Festival.

I will also be joining 5 other artists in a show at Gallery Uptown during the month of March called “A Few of Our Favorite Things”.  I will have 10 collage pieces on display for this show.  I hope you can stop by for a look!Hope

Matisse and the Eye Path

Third grade artists have been learning about Henri Matisse this week.  They discovered that Matisse “drew with his scissors” as he made his cut paper collages.  They were intrigued to learn about the way Matisse created an eye-path for the viewer to follow in his “Beasts of the Sea” collage – and now we are looking for an artist eye-path in every work of art that we see!

Today 3rd grade began “drawing with scissors” to create their own cut-paper collages – a Matisse inspired figure with a border filled with organic shapes – and of course, an eye path!

The Collage Project

MRS. BROUWER’S COLLAGE PROJECT….

I always make an art-related goal for myself over the summer.  This year my (overly ambitious!) goal has been to create one small collage every day.   I have discovered that I work a little too slowly to produce a daily collage….but the process has brought me to my little upstairs studio each day and I am hooked on making these fun pieces of art!  I discovered that I need to give myself a “theme” for each group of collages…..this theme of recent collages is SEEING.  My next group has already seen influence from our garden…stay tuned for some Veggie Tale collages next!
