Fourth Grade Highway And Byways

Paul Klee’s “Highway and Byways” was the inspiration for these pieces created by our Fourth Grade artists.

This project also focused on our school-wide goal of improving student math number sense with a deeper understanding of fractions. Fourth grade students used their knowledge of fractions to divide their paper space into halves, thirds, and fourths. They chose a warm or cool color palette and used watercolor to fill in their spaces. The finished pieces are a reflection of their use of color, shape, line, and of course…fractions!

Second Grade Story Quilts

Second grade artists have been studying the work of American artist Faith Ringgold. They were intrigued by her famous Story Quilts and enjoyed reading the story and words that surround her quilts.

Ringgold – “The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles”

Second graders learned how to weave paper to create their “quilt” and added stories about themselves to finish the piece. They created a giant cover to hold their weavings, and took them home – just in time for Mother’s Day!

Each year, student artwork is selected for display at our Administration Building. The framed artwork is “on loan” for one year and then returned to the students. It is always a pleasure to drop the artwork off at the Administration Building – everyone there stops what they are doing and gathers around the art pieces, deciding (with perhaps a little friendly arguing) which piece will hang near their office for the year.

Two pieces have been selected for display from Georgetown Elementary. Drum roll please….

Oh, the Laughter!

If you happened to pass the art room lately, you may have heard lots of giggling, laughter, squeals of surprise…well, more than usual anyway!

My artists have been getting a kick out of looking at artwork that they created during their years at Georgetown – from kindergarten right up to their current grade. Each year I have asked them to draw four things – a self portrait, house, tree, and an animal or insect. I save their “drawing inventory” and file them all together. This year I began sending these treasures home – and everyone has been having a good giggle at their earlier art work.

These “drawing inventories” have been an interesting way to show artistic growth in the art room; their drawings are a neat reflection of each students’ developing creativity and drawing ability. However, keeping the many copies of drawings from year to year has become a bit cumbersome – and now that we are posting more student work on Artsonia, each student’s “art gallery” will become our visual measure of student artistic growth.

Kindergarten Spring Flowers and Bugs

Kindergarten artists are trying to bring some Spring to our school by painting large flowers. Each artist drew a large flower then chose warm or cool color paints to mix and paint their petals with. They then chose their favorite insect to draw and color with markers to add to their flowers. We were hoping the Kindergarten flowers would bring Spring to our school since we don’t feel it outside!

Dandy-Lions

Well, let’s hope all this rain brings us ….. dandelions! Several of my classes have been enjoying this pretty spring “filler” project while their classmates are finishing up other projects.

Our dandelions are inspired by a post from “Art Projects For Kids” – How to Draw a Dandelion.

Claude Monet’s Frogs

First grade artists have been learning about the Impressionist work of Claude Monet. As they examined Monet’s Japanese Bridge painting, they all wondered….where are the frogs on the lily pads?!

So…we created lily pads, blending our colors so it looked like the sun was shining on them, just like Monet might do. They added little tissue paper flowers, and finished with these too-cute-for-words frogs.
