Third Grade Artists Explore…MOLAS!

So, what is a Mola, anyway?  Third grade artists will tell you that “mola” is the Kuna Indian word for shirt or clothing, and is part of the traditional clothing made by the Kuna Indians from the San Blas Islands of Panama.  The Kuna Indian women make their traditional art form by layering and stitching together bright fabrics.

Our Georgetown interpretation of the Kuna molas focus on images from nature just like the molas of the Kuna culture; but our molas are made from markers and cut paper.  The Georgetown molas are indeed colorful and beautiful works of art – much like the molas found on the San Blas Islands!

Kailen was so interested in the molas we viewed in the art room that she found a mola piece on line and brought it in for us to see!
