Fourth Grade Portraits

Fourth grade artists have been studying the art of American Artists Mary Cassatt.  They learned that she loved to paint children, including her own nieces and nephew.  So of course they created portraits of children – themselves!

After writing about themselves and creating a background of colored tissue paper, they traced their portraits from photos.

  1. Hi Wendy – here’s what we did: I took photos of the kiddos and printed them in black/white, 4″ x 6″. We taped a piece of laminating film to the photo (I always save my laminating film scraps left from trimming anything I’ve laminated.) The kids then traced their photo portraits with a sharpie marker. Have lots of extra laminate scraps available – many of my kiddos needed to practice this first and then do their final tracing; eyes and noses were hard to trace! My kids loved this project.
