Winter Trees

Fourth grade artists have just finished these beautiful winter tree landscapes.  They used bits of masking tape to create their white trees, then painted some deep blue watercolor paint over the top, adding a sprinkle of salt for texture.  The really fun part?  Rubbing off the salt and gently peeling the tape away to reveal the sparkling white trees!  The final flourish – shadows on the trees and white stars and a moon, painted with acrylic paint.

  1. I’d like to do this project with my third graders. Did you use watercolor paper or would white drawing paper work?

  2. Hi Sharon! I tried a sample with white drawing paper for this project – you really need to use watercolor paper or possibly a heavy tagboard for this project. The difficulty is peeling the masking tape after the watercolor has dried…plain paper rips as you peel the masking tape away. The slight texture on the watercolor paper prevented the tape from sticking to the paper too tightly, and the kids could easily peel the tape off after the watercolor had dried. Good luck – it was a great project for my kiddos.
