Second Grade Cat in the Hats
March 29, 2012
Second grade artists created these fun Cat in the Hat portraits for their Dr. Seuss’s Reader’s Cafe. Gotta love a great Cat in the Hat!

Could you please explain how the pictures were made. I love them and would love to do that with my students.
Hi Tonia -this was an easy project and the kiddos really enjoyed it! I took the kids’ photos and printed them in black/white on regular 8 1/2 x 11 paper. The kids cut their photo out and glued it to a tall piece of drawing paper, drew their hats in crayon, and painted red with tempera paint. They added whiskers with black Sharpie markers, and a bow tie was drawn with crayon and painted with tempera as well. When the paint was dry, they added some shading with the black crayon too. We looked at Cat in the Hat photos from the book to see how to draw the hat.
