SPACE!

I’ve been using these boxes to illustrate the Art Elements and Principles with my students this year.  I piled them up in the window a while ago, and my kids are constantly shifting them around to suit their artistic whims.

I smiled today when I saw that someone had provided their version of …. Space!

  1. Can you tell me more about these boxes? I would love to use this idea this year. What kinds of things to you put in them? Are they teaching tools just for you or do you have a few things that students can get out as well? Like enough for a whole class?

  2. I too am curious about these boxes, what is inside/how you use them. Would appreciate any addiitonal insight

  3. Hi Kristin – well, these started out as a way to advertise our 10th Annual Student Art Show – see this post: http://josettebrouwer.edublogs.org/2010/03/24/2010-hudsonville-student-art-show-2/ The boxes were painted as a tie-in to a Jackson Pollock project by my 3rd graders, then given out to staff and school board to advertise the art show. A local business donated the boxes – they are about 5″x5″ square – and we painted them with tempera paint and lots of splashes and squiggles of paint. We put styro peanuts inside for a little rattle, taped them up with packing tape, and they were stacked up for display everywhere (we made 100 of them) – in the lounge, school showcase, etc. When the show was over, I had about 25 left and couldn’t throw them out – so the boxes were reinvented for classroom use, to demonstrate the art elements and principles. When I introduce a new work of art, we find the art elements/principles used and stack the boxes up as we find them. Makes kind of a neat visual for the kids to see and help understand the importance of using the “building blocks” in their art making. Sometimes the kids just fool around with them, stacking them up…I figure that’s ok too, because they are reading the outside of the boxes and maybe some of those elements and principles are sinking into their brains and they don’t even realize it! Hope that helps – let me know if you have more questions.
