Grand Rapids ArtPrize – go see it!

My students have been a-buzz about ArtPrize this year, and many of them have already visited downtown Grand Rapids to see the 1,700 pieces on display.  They all have their favorite pieces and are eager to share their ideas!  Here’s a little video of some of my favorites.  ARTPRIZE 2010

ArtPrize is Here!

What would you say to viewing over 7,000 pieces of art on display throughout downtown Grand Rapids?  The big art party called ArtPrize is once again rocking in Grand Rapids, and you just have to go take a look!  I spent about 5 hours wandering around G.R. Saturday afternoon – here are a few of [...]

Walk-a-Thon 2010

Just a little plug from the Art Room for Georgetown’s 2010 Walk-a-Thon fund raiser, which will be held September 29 and September 30 this week.  The funds raised from this event allow our awesome Parent Club to support and enrich so many areas of our school, including one of my pet projects – our permanent [...]

Action Jackson Project

Third Grade artists began learning about “Action Jackson” Pollock this week.  We read Action Jackson by Greenberg and Jordan, and looked at several reproductions of Pollock’s action paintings.  Everyone was excited and energized by Pollock’s abstract expressionist paintings! So we got busy with our Action Jackson project by creating a textured background with warm color [...]

Third Grade Nature Drawings

Third Graders completed their line review with observation drawings from nature.  After examining the detailed drawings of Albrecht Durer, third graders were excited to create their own drawings from nature by looking at loads of leaves, dried flowers and branches from Mrs. Brouwer’s garden.  I learned later from my students that they were studying plants [...]

Our First Grade artists have been busy creating….SLUGS!  We read the silly book Slugs by David Greenberg, and then created GIANT slugs! We drew our slugs with a big black marker, colored their fancy clothes with crayon and painted their bodies with brown watercolor.  The last step was to review the art element of Texture [...]

Crazy Cactus Project

Fifth Graders began a Crazy Cactus art project this week.  The project is a great way to review the art elements; my 5th graders were amazed to find six of the seven art elements as they viewed my sample of the project. We began by drawing a simple cactus with big black markers and adding [...]

Lines and More Lines!

My artists in grades 1, 2, and 3 began the school year reviewing and experimenting with the art element of line.  Check out our awesome line projects! First Grade Exploring Lines….. Second Grade Scribble Line Drawing.  We talked about all the kinds of lines we know – then took a dot for a walk – [...]

Love Those Sketchbooks!

Fourth and Fifth grade artists have been busy putting their art room sketchbooks together the first weeks of school.  Their sketchbooks stay in the art room and we use them in lots of different ways – note taking, brainstorming art ideas, thumbnail “thinking” sketches, and just plain doodling. For extra inspiration, I’ve been showing both [...]

Kindergarten Magnificent Me Portraits

Kindergarten artists enjoyed creating their own “Magnificent Me” portraits after enjoying The One, The Only Magnificent Me by Dan Haseltine. We drew really, really big ovals with black crayons and then added lots of fun Magnificent Me details – spouting horns, wings, and feathery feathers.  Then we (gasp!) painted in our very first art class!  [...]
